Every empty state in a design system is a promise about the future: someday there will be a subtitle here, a second image there. Most of those promises go unkept, and the layout spends years apologising for the gap.

The alternative is dull and it works. Ask for the real text before drawing a single box, then make every optional field render nothing at all when it is empty — no placeholder, no reserved space, no faint grey line where a caption might go.

A field that renders nothing when empty is worth three that render politely.

It costs a little more up front, mostly in conversations. It saves the six months after launch, which is when someone quietly decides the site is too much work to keep up.
